Citing the benefits of clean, renewable power in San Diego, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has endorsed San Diego Gas & Electric's proposed Sunrise Powerlink transmission line.
In a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission, Governor Schwarzenegger said the Sunrise Powerlink would deliver additional electricity to the area, while connecting San Diego to the vast supplies of green power in the Imperial Valley region needed to meet California's aggressive renewable energy requirements.
"The Sunrise Powerlink stands to take that relationship one step further by providing direct access to clean, renewable energy sources ranging from wind to geothermal, plus connecting the San Diego region to what could become the largest solar energy facility in the world," Governor Schwarzenegger wrote.
Increasing the use of renewable power is a key element of Governor Schwarzenegger's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Utilities like SDG&E are now required to derive 20 percent of their energy from clean, renewable resources. However, according to the California Energy Commission the lack of power lines that connect population centers to the state's green energy supplies is a major impediment to reaching that goal.
Governor Schwarzenegger joins more than 75 state, local and federal elected officials throughout California and energy experts such as the California Energy Commission and California Independent System Operator, which manages the state's power grid, in supporting the Sunrise Powerlink.
The California Public Utilities Commission is expected to make a final decision on the power line later this summer.
